Kohl’s slashed its sales and profit expectations for the year as the department store chain stepped up price cutting to get rid of unwanted merchandise.
The department store also cut back on orders ahead of the critical holiday period, spooking investors and sending shares, down 35% this year, falling another 5%.

President Joe Biden calls Finland and Sweden “our allies of the high north.” And their addition to NATO could bring military and territorial advantages to the Western defense alliance. That’s especially so as the rapid melting of the Arctic from climate change awakens strategic rivalries at the top of the world. The two Nordic nations rushed to join NATO after Russian President Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine in February. Two-thirds of NATO's 30 member nations have approved their membership so far. NATO would be bringing in two sophisticated militaries and, in Finland’s case, a remarkable tradition of national defense, and skill at Arctic fighting, even on skis and snowshoes.
Russian forces are stepping up their battle to seize one of the cities in eastern Ukraine not already under their control while continuing to fire on areas in the country’s north and south. Ukrainian officials said Russian shelling collapsed balconies and blew out windows in the southern region of Mykolayiv, injuring at least nine civilians on Saturday The region's governor said an apartment building and private homes were badly damaged. Reflecting the broadening frontlines of the war in Ukraine, a Ukrainian airstrike hit targets in the largest Russian-occupied city in the southern Zaporizhzhia region. The Ukrainian mayor of Melitopol said preliminary reports pointed to “a precise hit” on a Russian military base.
Officials in southern Turkey say at least 15 people were killed when a passenger bus collided with emergency teams handling an earlier road accident. Three firefighters, two paramedics and two journalists were among those killed on the highway between Gaziantep and Nizip on Saturday, the interior minister said. The other eight fatalities were on the bus. Gaziantep Gov. Davut Gul said 22 other people were injured in the crash. Turkey has a poor record of road safety. Some 5,362 people were killed in traffic accidents last year.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott often knocks President Joe Biden for the country's high rate of inflation and fears of a looming recession. So do many other Republicans, including state leaders in Georgia and Florida, as they sharpen their critiques before the November elections. But prices are rising more dramatically across much of those three states than they are nationally. Democrats say Republicans are taking credit for job growth that's been enabled by Biden's policies, even as Republicans blame those same policies for inflation. Still, voters seem to be holding Biden accountable for inflation while being more generous in doling out praise for the nation's low unemployment rate.
Lots of things are broken right now in U.S. politics. The good news is that there’s new evidence that one important thing is working just fine: When bad things happen presidents get less popular, and when good things happen? Their approval ratings improve.
A bronze statue of an enslaved woman from Massachusetts who went to court to win her freedom in 1781 is being unveiled in the Berkshires this weekend. The statue of Elizabeth Freeman will be unveiled Sunday during a ceremony in Sheffield expected to attract about 200 people. Freeman was inspired to sue for her freedom by the words of the Sheffield Resolves and the state constitution that both say all men are free and equal. Historians say the case essentially ended slavery in Massachusetts. The effort to raise the statue was spearheaded by state Rep. Smitty Pignatelli.
Scorching heat during China's driest summer in six decades has left crops wilting and farmers struggling. Hundreds of persimmon trees are wilted in Gan Bingdong's greenhouse in southwestern China. A reservoir beside Gan's farm has run dry, forcing him to pump groundwater. Some areas have declared the summer growing season a total loss. The national weather agency said drought conditions across China have increased significantly, from the densely populated east across central farming provinces west into eastern Tibet. The forecast called for no rain and high temperatures for at least three more days. Local authorities were ordered to use all available water sources to supply households and livestock.
Family, friends and fans have paid tribute to French cartoonist Jean-Jacques Sempé, who died last week at age 89. Sempé's work graced more than 100 covers of The New Yorker magazine and granted him international acclaim. In his native France, he found fame with illustrations for the classic “Le Petit Nicolas” (“Little Nicholas”) children’s book series, and went on to specialize in drawings about life’s simple pleasures. For The New Yorker, Sempé captured the thin, fashionable haute bourgeoisie of Paris and mustachioed, beret-wearing townsfolk, all bearing hallmark hulking noses. A funeral Mass for the artist affectionately known as J.J. in the United States took place Friday at the Church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris.
ATLANTA — A dearth of reliable information about COVID-19 in jails is preventing health officials and policymakers across the nation from learning the true impact of the pandemic on incarcerated people and law enforcement employees.
The head of the World Food program says the United States is stepping up to buy about 150,000 metric tons of grain from Ukraine in the next few weeks for an upcoming shipment to hungry areas of the world. The U.N. agency's executive director told The Associated Press about the development on Friday, speaking from northern Kenya. David Beasley says the final destinations for the grain are not confirmed. But the planned shipment would be more than six times bigger than the one the first WFP-arranged ship from Ukraine is now carrying toward the drought-stressed Horn of Africa. Another failed rainy season could tip parts of the Horn, especially Somalia, into famine.

SEATTLE — The film of the Seahawks' first-half performance in Thursday's preseason game at Lumen Field should be dutifully studied by all the participants — and then burned. No reason to leave for future generations any remnants of this ragged display of uninspired, mistake-filled football, …
LOS ANGELES — March 31 felt like a pretty normal Minnesota spring day to Greg Flugaur. He took care of his elderly parents who live with him. It was cold, but not frigid by the standards of his northern tribe, so as night fell he went to a gas station to vacuum the inside of his 14-year-old …

A leaked video that shows Finland’s 36-year-old prime minister dancing and singing with friends at a private party has triggered a debate among Finns about what level of reveling is appropriate for their leader. The video clearly shot by someone at the party was leaked on social media and caught the attention of Finnish media this week. Marin has faced a barrage of questions about the party: Were there drugs? Was she sober enough to handle an emergency had one arisen? Some citizens said the side of the prime minister on display in the video was potentially damaging to Finland's reputation. Others say Marin has a right to party like anyone else.
ATLANTA — We had a caller to our Politically Georgia podcast recently, Fran from New Jersey, who was totally confounded by the possibility that Herschel Walker is in a close race against Raphael Warnock for U.S. Senate.
California teenagers should have the right to protect their health by receiving approved vaccines without parental consent or knowledge.
Greece's close financial oversight by European Union creditors is ending. Saturday's milestone closes an unwelcome chapter dating to the country's painful bailout years. It gives Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ center-right government greater freedom at a time when Greece, like all of Europe, is struggling with a post-pandemic cost-of-living and energy crisis triggered by Russia's war in Ukraine. Unlike the end of Greece's budget checks, rising prices and high unemployment are key issues that have a tangible effect on ordinary Greeks. And the country will still be monitored by its creditors while it pays back its debts. That will take another two generations, with the last loans due for repayment in 2070.

A Japanese chemical tanker ship has crashed into a cargo ship off the coast of southwestern Japan. No one was injured among the six Japanese crew aboard Ryoshinmaru, the tanker, and 14 Chinese crew aboard the Belize-registered cargo ship, Xin Hai 99. The crash early Saturday is under investigation. A Kushimoto Coast Guard official said both ships are anchored in the area, about two miles off the coast of Wakayama Prefecture. Some oil leaked from the engine area of the cargo ship, and it initially started to sink, but it was brought under control, the official said.
Davis Mills threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Nico Collins with one second left in the first half, salvaging something good from an up-and-down performance in the Houston Texans’ 24-20 preseason victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Mills is expected to be the rebuilding Texans’ starting quarterback again this season, but Houston’s offense didn’t click much against the Rams’ second- and third-stringers until his final two throws to Phillip Dorsett and Collins netted a combined 50 yards. Roger Carter Jr. scooped and scored for the Rams on a fumbled punt return in the third quarter.
