News & Record Has Bad News For Funny Page Readers - The Rhino Times of Greensboro

An article on the front page of the News & Record on Tuesday, Sept. 13 had bad news for the few print subscribers the daily newspaper has left.

The article headlined, “Comics, puzzle changes take effect in today’s edition,” made it sound like it wasn’t bad news.

You have to read to the third paragraph to find out what the article is about, and it is presented as something “new.”

The article states, “With that in mind, you’ll notice that in today’s print edition, we’re providing you with a new slate of comics, puzzles, advice content and other features.”

When you turn to the “new” comics page, you find that the full page of comics has been replaced with a half page and 14 of the 22 comics that the News & Record ran on Monday, Sept. 12 have been eliminated in the Tuesday, Sept. 13 edition.

The comics that are no longer on the new half page of comics include: Brewster Rocket: Space Guy!, Sally Forth, Blondie, Wumo, Shoe, Beetle Bailey, Jump Start, Dilbert, Wallace the Brave, Zits, Breaking Cat News, Judge Parker, Curtis, Dennis the Menance, The Family Circus, Mr. Boffo and Ziggy.

The new half page of comics is down from 22 comics to 10 with a couple of new additions. The comics that have been added are Peanuts, For Better or For Worse, Crabgrass, The Argyle Sweater and Close to Home.

The only comics from the old comics page that made the cut to the new half page of comics are Garfield, Pearls Before Swine, Luann and Pickles.

Although newspapers hate to admit it, the comics are one of the most popular parts of the paper. A lot of readers, glance at the headlines and then go straight to the comics and if they have time may go back and read a couple of stories.  That trip to the comics page isn’t going to take as long as it did.

It’s bad news for Greensboro that the daily newspaper can no longer support a full page of comics.

I remember when the print Rhino couldn’t afford the NYT Sunday puzzle anymore, Strangely, I don’t remember any editorial content from you about that one.

I see we have a leftist troll from GGP in our midst. Go back to the safety of the Bolshevik echo chamber there, Dick.

The GN&R just plain sucks. The publisher is now in Ohio. Let the rag die.

I really miss the NYT Sunday Crossword that the Rhino used to include in its former weakly published paper. Any way for the Rhino to make that available again, on rhinotimes.com??

I don’t think so.

Never hurts to ask. Thanks for the response!

They did the same thing to the Winston Salem Journal. Guess I will no longer subscribe.

Just like everything now: Pay MORE, get LESS!

Their “News” is usually a comedy of errors, maybe counting on readers appreciating that.

Another reason why I’m not renewing my News &Record subscription this year. The paper is nothing but a joke – the only thing it’s good for is lining a bird cage.

Quit reading the News and Fishwrap when the journalistic competence fell to such a level that one Easter edition had the headline in the then Religion section stating something to the effect the Christ died on “Cavalry”.

Having been raised on The Daily Telegraph, The Daily Mail, The Times, The Sun (I loved page 3), the Western Mail and the Yorkshire Post, I always thought that the whole GN&R was a comic anyway.

Hey! I’ve got some new (old) news. Second week of September, I walk it to my favorite Big Wally Superstore.

There to greet my like something in a punch bowl is a massive display of Kristmas Krap right in the front for Jesus and everyone else to glory in. I just can’t wait! Let’s buy some of this Krap right now, before it’s too late; or before we spend our money on something like……FOOD.

December 25th is celebrated as Jesus’ birthday. It is not a compulsion to buy even more junque that you don’t need, with money you don’t have, to the end of carrying a CC balance fore-ever.

I’ve been a newspaper reader for over 50 years since civics class in high school. Really don’t like e-editions but I’m ready to just say goodbye to the fish wrap. Higher rates hardly any local news or two day late sports coverage. Nothing but ap national news. So here goes “Hasta la vista baby”

Bad enough leaving out some of our favorite comics (Judge Parker for example) you dropped my favorite crossword. I enjoy the Thomas Joseph puzzle. LA Times! No way. The News and Record keeps raising their prices and the customer (me) keeps getting less and less. And what happened to the column This Day in History? Some of your customers might learn a bit of history! Occasionally I like to cut out an article or add. Now I would like to just cut up the paper! Well, it is good for lining the bottom of my bird cage.

I cancelled my annual subscription to GN&R on the morning of November 4, 2020, when I saw the headline that Biden had won, which meant that when the paper went to print GN&R had already called the election for Biden. When I called GN&R to complain, I was greeted with a euphoric GN&R employee. I decided then that reading the GN&R was no longer for me.

By the way, newspaper is great for gardens and flower beds. Helps smother weeds and enriches the soil as it biodegrades at the same time. One word of caution, skunks like to burrow their noses under the newspaper searching for bugs, worms and such. This is a sign of skunks’ opinion of the GN&R.

Local newspapers like the fish wrap GN&R are struggling to find their place in a world dominated by E-news outlets. Who needs paper when you have an IPhone or Google? It was always a liberal paper to begin with, so who needs it.

Joe I understand the liberal part. It’s just that for over 55 years I’ve always started my day with coffee and a newspaper in my hand I an use a computer and have an IPhone but it’s just not the same I know my wife says I’m a dinosaur but my goodness can’t they just leave the comics alone

I want to keep an active local newspaper — News & Record — and also want full page of cartoons — some funnies are needed now more than ever. How much money did they really save by eliminating comincs?

It’s been puzzling to watch what is happening to newspapers bought up by chains. It is as if they are trying to put them out of business. The only way that makes sense is if the chains are buying them for downtown real estate and never intended to keep them in business.

I would suggest the Wall Street Journal. They have real domestic and foreign news, along with insight into what’s going on in the financial world. All the opinions and editorializing are on the OPINION pages, where it belongs. Opinions from everyone from Elizabeth Warren to Karl Rove.

You can learn for example, that there is a diminishing and more expensive supply of potable water. Maybe a place to invest?

Newstand is too expensive. Get it in print or on line.

I quit the N&R quite some time ago. Lots of changes have come and gone since, none of which gave me the least inclination to resume.

Reading the above replies, one can’t miss the red flags and warning signals that have been sounding far too long, and seemingly, repeatedly ignored.

Pretty sad when the comics have a stronger drawing power than the news articles! That being said, why shoot oneself in the foot by lessening the apparent appeal of the one thing left to them?

In the last couple of weeks, the N&R sent me yet another invitation to rejoin the ranks of their receivers! I’ll leave my response to your imagination. (Hint: I have better ways to waste my money!)
